Anxiety is a normal and adaptive physiological response, which prepares the body to deal with a threat. Therefore, we experience anxiety when our threat system is activated.
Even though anxiety is normal, it can often become an overwhelming and unbearable feeling. We often seek ineffective ways to avoid anxiety and we find ourselves stuck in unhelpful behavioural patterns that further maintain it. Anxiety can manifest in various ways, such as general and persistent worry, obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours, health anxiety, panic, or fear of social situations.
All of those conditions share the fact that our threat system is activated. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy seeks to understand the patterns that maintain anxiety and, through various tailored interventions, to break the vicious cycle and sooth the threat system. CBT is the treatment of choice for OCD, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Social anxiety, Panic disorder, Health Anxiety and specific phobias.
